Hell Boy 2, discussion, without scene or plot spoilers
I'm not one to go to the movies without some knowledge of it, reviews of sorts, buzz, good or poor. And, before going to see "Hell Boy 2," I'd seen some trailers, read some mixed LJ friends notes, saw the number of stars given by critics. Mention had been made of the plot so that was forefront in my mind during the watching. There was plot/plots, maybe too many of them, but they followed through with, of course, the possibility of more-to-come thread. Only one minor line where I scratched my head and pondered where did that come from. And, one mighty question at a logical flaw.
My thought on the movie was that it was busy, a busy movie. And, that's true to a point, the point where it isn't. Very long action scenes. Then, momentary views, close up visuals lingering as though one has paused to view a work of art, pausing to admire the attention to detail. Serious fantastical themes lingering, then, flowing, falling away, to the side, as heroic superness competes to fill the screen.
Humor in nicknames, and comebacks, human emotional concerns, lightly portrayed while, also, carrying a depth of individual identity. And, there was serious social issues raised. Intimate social issues as well as racial ones.
While watching the movie, I wanted to like it, and found myself loving segments of it, pausing in others. Looking for something solid to gasp, loosing my grip time and time again, then, catching at something else, focusing upon this other aspect, again and again, then, finally, leaving with both a sense of conclusion and a sense of confusion.
I don't regret having gone to see it, nor the fact that with my attendance, I, also, paid for three additional tickets. I believe that each member of my group received something for themselves in the movie. In this time of high fantasy in the theaters, this movie, imho, tried to give something visually magically yet rock solid in regard to the essence of what it means to be human. I not so sure it succeeded, but, there it is and I applaud the attempt.
