white rose

Roommate 3

Not a ER mate this time, but the roommate of the hospital room so large and airy, I told Dale we should request it for all his stays.  His roommate, an elderly, black man made small by the white sheets and covers on the bed.   Fine boned, with shortly-cut, white hair.  He looked worn and tired.  Exhausted, except when he smiled, then, his smile lit up up his face and how could one not help but fall in love.   An angel in blue, hospital pajamas.

the doctor and rose

Roommate 2

They arrive together; a tall, elderly man accompanied by a tall, elderly woman.   The woman is cheerful, optimistic.  She calls her companion, "Daddy"  in the warmest, the sweetest of voices.  Later, as she stands slightly aside with the doctor, she whispers, "I'm his wife."

Roommate 1

He arrives via ambulance.  A huge man with shoulder length, curly, reddish-brown hair.  At one time, he might have been a grizzly bear.  On weekends, he probably rides with a motorcyle gang.  On this day, he is without fur or leather, naked from the waist up, suffering from what appears to be a stroke.

ER -- Quick Quick

So, Monday, I spent over seven hours in the ER at the VA hosp with the spouse.  (He was admitted, treated, released the next day, so not to worry.)   So, I'm writing a small series of posts from that.

The opening procedure (based upon my visits there with him).  Go to the window and give name and last four, mention symptoms, get bracelet, sit in the waiting room less than a minute.  Nurse arrives and takes you away for a blood pressure reading, more information on symptoms and/or pain.  Wait about thirty seconds in waiting room or at the nurse's check-in station and then be escorted to the ER bed.  Within five minutes, have a doctor look in, have all monitors hooked up (heart, blood pressure, oxygen), have three to four tubes of blood drawn, an IV for fluids attached, and know what other tests and/or x-rays will be taken.

Yes, that quick.
